2024 Benjamin Moore Color of the Year Blue Nova Paint Color Review

Benjamin Moore’s 2024 Color of the Year is Blue Nova. I was quite surprised when it was announced, to be honest. Its a bold choice but Benjamin Moore always makes bold choices for their color of the Year. But when you look at Ben’s Color of the Year choices for the last few years, its shouldn’t come as a surprise. Benjamin Moore has always offered bold color choices for their color of the year. And why shouldn’t they? They are a paint company and their job, some would argue, is to encourage us to step outside our box and try out different colors. I commend them actually, since they are doing their job!

When the pandemic hit, and we were just coming out of the all gray interior phrase, in the middle of the all white interior phase, Benjamin Moore hits us with First Light 2102-70, a rosy pink blush. In 2021, we were hit with another surprising choice, but a color we came to love, Aegean Teal 2136-40, a warm vibrant blue-green color. In 2022, at the height of the pandemic, again we were surprised by Ben’s color choice of October Mist CC-50, a lovely shade of sage green that has become, in my humble opinion, become Benjamin’s Moore most popular color of the year and has taken North American by storm. Sage green is still a very popular color for kitchens, interiors, and house exteriors as well. Last year’s color, Raspberry Blush 2008-30 didn’t seem to take off as this bold red orange shade was just too much for the average homeowner.

What’s Is Benjamin Moore’s Blue Nova’s LRV?

Blue Nova’s LRV (Light Reflective Value) is 16.98 which puts it in the dark color category. Its a moody blue color that gives you attitude in the right places.

What are the undertones of Blue Nova?

Blue Nova is a bold blue-violet color. Its definitely blue, but you can see the strong violet vibe going. That’s why you will often hear it referred to as a blue-violet. It has gray undertones which gives it its moody charm.

Is Blue Nova a warm or cool color?

Blue Nova is definitely a cool color but because of the violet undertones, however, Blue Nova does not come across as cold as some blues can because of the blue-violet blend.

Where can I use Benjamin Moore Color of the Year Blue Nova?

There are definitely areas in your home where you can use Blue Nova. Some areas work better than others. For example, Benjamin Moore’s promo shot was using Blue Nova in an office like we see in their picture below. Bedrooms and as an accent wall color in a living space like a living room or family room would give any room a burst of warmth and boldness quickly. It would also make a gorgeous front door color.

Can we just put this out there and say how gorgeous is Blue Nova as an exterior front door paint color? Its absolutely stunning! You can see the blue-gray with a touch of violet very clearly in this picture.

Benjamin Moore in the Office

Blue Nova would make a fun and bold office statement. If you find a whole office painted Blue Nova too much, you can paint part of it like the desk portion, or just the shelving for example. Experiment and try it out.

Benjamin Moore Blue Nova in the Bathroom

NOT Benjamin Moore Nova Blue pictured above, a lighter moody shade, but you can see how it could work in a bathroom.

Blue bathrooms are always calming and its the look you want for your bathroom in my humble opinion. I did NOT use Nova Blue above in my family bathroom for my last house flip. I used a lighter blue, but I wish I had used Nova Blue. You can see how nicely it would go with the crisp white sink and brown vanity. This color above, was my third color choice. The first color was a wimpy blue that I picked from a color chip. (I know. What was I thinking? I was in a hurry!) The second color was a pre-mix gray|blue that was as equally as boring if not more. The third color, the blue above was the boldness I was going for. I could have even got one step further in blue boldness, lol and use Nova Blue. Nova Blue would look great in a powder room or a family bathroom.

Benjamin Moore Nova Blue in the Bedroom

Blue is always a fun color to have in a bedroom and Blue Nova is no exception to this bedroom above. Its moody and can be very romantic. I can see this bed covered in white linen with loads and loads of white fluffy pillows with a white or beige throw that matches the carpet lovingly draped over the bed.

Blue Nova in the Living Room

Honestly, its hard to picture Blue Nova in a living room. Especially if you have a large living room that is an open concept with the kitchen adjoining. I feel it would be too powerful as a whole room but I could definitely see Blue Nova used as an accent wall color for a living room or a family room.

Blue Nova in the Dining Room

Blue Nova would make a fabulous color in the dining room. Especially if your dining room is in its own room and not in an open concept area. Rich, cozy and bold. I’m going to use in our dining room when I do the makeover.. I will post soon how it looks. Stay tuned!

Blue Nova as an Accent Wall

Blue Nova looks great as an accent wall if you want to part of a wall or a whole wall. It would definitely pop your room. In the picture above, the upper part of the wall is Benjamin Moore’s White Dove.

Is Blue Nova a good color for a Kitchen?

That depends. If you follow the trends, blue kitchens are not considered to be trendy for 2024. We’re seeing cream, greige, white and for kitchen cabinet color trends for 2024.

If you live in a coastal area, I could definitely see this color as a kitchen island, or for lower cabinets, for example, amongst white cabinets. That would look stunning. Would I use Blue Nova in an urban area? No, I wouldn’t recommend it. It would look out of place and not be great for resale value if you’re selling your home.

Is Blue Nova a good color as an exterior paint color?

Typically Blue Nova would not be a good exterior color unless its used in a coastal area. I could see myself painting my beach house located in a popular tourist town this color with crisp white trim and a crisp white front door. It would look fabulous, but I would not recommend Blue Nova for an urban setting. It would look out of place.

What white trim goes with Blue Nova?

Crisp White paint colors would look fantastic with Blue Nova.

Hi! I’m Debi Collinson. Designer. Color Consultant. Real Estate Investor.

I conducted my first paint color consult at the age of 7. lol. I grew up looking at blue prints and helping my dad, an Engineer|General Contractor and owner of a Design|Build|Engineering firm pick out paint colors for his building projects.

In 2006, a Realtor asked me to stage a house. Staging was just becoming a thing so I watched every HGTV show I could to get knowledge. My first clients liked their newly staged home so much that they turned down an offer for full asking price and stayed in their home. I went back to Design School and the rest is history. Since 2006, I have been helping busy homeowners, just like you, to style their house to make it a stunning retreat, where they can live and enjoy their home.

In my spare time, LOL, I buy “fixer uppers” to fix up & either sell for a healthy profit or to rent. I’m currently looking for my 10th “fixer upper.” Sign up to receive my e-mails of how to make your home a stunning retreat, how to choose the right paint color the first time around AND how to add value to your home! Read my full story including my design credentials here.
