How to Design a Shared Guest Bedroom
Whether you have a lake house, a farmhouse getaway, or perhaps you want to create a bedroom where the grandkids can come and have fun, create a shared guests bedroom that will make your guests feel welcome!
Who is the bedroom for?
Your first step in creating an inviting shared bedroom is deciding on who the primary guests will be using the bedroom. Will it be primarily stuff as many kids in a bedroom as you can or will it be a combination of kids & their parents? This is key because for a kids bedroom, single bunkbeds can be key in able to sleep as many kids as possible. If there will be occasions where kids & their parents and sharing, you probably want to put in a combination of a double or queen sized bed along with some bunk beds depending on the space.

Double Bunk Beds for a Mountain Home
Photo: Becki Owens
If you have the space, a double bunk bed room is very versatile. In this room above in a mountain retreat, this room can accommodate up to 8 guests at a time. The contemporary bedding makes the space versatile for adults, kids, and teens. This set up works with rooms in high ceilings. It would not work in attics or lofts unfortunately to due lack of height.
Can you say pillow fight? Make kids rooms fun!
In one of my AirBnB’s in a fun beach town where everyone walks around in flip flops with their mini surfboards for skimming, I created a fun bunk bed room using Ikea bunk beds that sleeps 4 kids. Its not a huge space but I painted it in a fun blue beach vibe paint color, with flip flops, skimming boards and fish towels for curtains. It has become a guest favorite. Kids love it! And it gets booked every year very quickly! You don’t need a ton of money to create a fun bunk bed space for kids. Just some imagination & creativity.
